FAQ

  • What's the genre? Simple answer: Sci-fi. More specific answer: Low, character-centric, feelings-forward sci-fi (highly regulated post-climate-disaster world with three man-made pseudo moons in orbit around the planet) with a dash of fantasy flavoring in the form of tethers/soulbonds.

  • Is it standalone? Yes! At this time, I don't have plans for a follow-up.

  • Is this a romance? For lack of more accurate marketing terminology, you might find some websites have auto-categorized this book as romance, and it does focus on an intense hate-to-love story (and many other forms of love) that I ambitiously hope might hold their own against other love stories. However, it's more of a queerplatonic relationship, and the book itself—including the tether system—focuses on and foregrounds platonic, fraternal, and found-familial bonds.

In the world of Lord of the Empty Isles, man-made pseudo-moons light the sky, left over from a centuries-past climate disaster, and the citizens of the recovered world are bound by invisible tethers. The color, location, and thickness of a tether can say a lot about the relationship of the people bound by it.

TETHER LOCATIONS

  • Head (Ruminant): Bearers of these intellectual bonds long to discover or innovate together.

  • Heart (Grasping): Instinctual and nurtured by nearness, these bonds indicate a hunger to connect.

  • Gut (Visceral): Primal, powerful, and passionate, these bonds are driven by a desire to consume.

  • Hands (Anchored): Those linked by these calm, sturdy bonds are eager to hold and to share.

  • Feet (Reckless): The dedicated bearers of reckless tethers long to serve and support.

Where are YOU bound?

TETHER TYPES

  • Lovebound: Gold lovebonds, loyal and steady, indicate a mutual and abiding care.

  • Fatebound: Red fatebonds connect pairs who are profoundly similar and ideologically aligned.

  • Piecebound: Blue piecebonds join people with contrasting but complementary personalities.

  • Boundless: Green boundless tethers connect those who work in sync, even if they’re far apart.

OTHER TERMINOLOGY

  • Rotbound: Trauma, loss, or other stressors may cause bonds to decay. When the rot is so advanced that the tether’s original color is lost, these bonds are called rotbonds.

  • Hollowbound: Ash-gray hollowbonds indicate unrequited or one-sided connections. Though they may be slightly thicker at their point of origin, they quickly attenuate to thread-like thinness. If a mutual relationship develops, they may thicken and transform into another bond type.

  • Traveling: As a relationship evolves, a tether may begin to move to a different location. This is known as traveling.

  • Attenuation: As relationships change, bonds may thicken or thin. Such thinning is called attenuation. Resisting a tether’s natural attenuation and eventual disappearance after separation or loss can lead to rot.

I am floored and beyond honored to be able to announce that my debut sci-fi Lord of the Empty Isles is the June pick for the Goldsboro Sci-Fi & Fantasy Fellowship (GSFF) and will be getting an exclusive special edition!

FAQ

  • What does that mean? Goldsboro Books specializes in signed, first-edition hardbacks, and its exclusive first-print royal hardcover edition of this book will feature sprayed edges (block-sprayed top and bottom and digitally printed fore-edge) and an absolutely gorgeous foil design under the dust jacket! Each copy will be signed and numbered by the author.

  • Why is there a tiny cat face drawn next to the signature on my signed book? Um. See, while I was signing, my cat decided to quality-check my work. Any sheet she walked over, sprawled across, or sat on has a cat face drawn on it. These pages have been personally examined and approved by Merlin the cat. There are more of these than I feel comfortable admitting, but not so many that I dare to hope I'll see one in the wild. If you get one and feel the urge, feel free to poke me on social media! I promise it will make my day.

  • Will they be available for general sale? While most of the books will be sent to subscribers (the list is fully subscribed, but there's a waitlist—more information on that here), extras may be posted for purchase on the Goldsboro website! I'll share more information as I have it!
